The Fourth of July is a wonderful time to celebrate family, community and the things that make our country special. As parents, we’re always seeking opportunities to find activities for kids that are both fun and educational. This holiday you can discuss with them the importance of this holiday by showing them how important the flag and the pledge are.

You can explain that the American flag stands for our whole country and that it’s one way we tell the world who we are as a people and because our flag is special, we treat it with respect.

The children here recite the Pledge of Allegiance, but like many other kids they might not understand exactly what they are saying.

We can explain that the pledge is simply a promise. We’re giving our word that we will be loyal to our country, which the flag stands for, a place where we can decide who our leaders will be, where everyone sticks together, and where our goal is for people to be free and treated fairly by others.
